Summary:
The prestigious filmmaking trio of producer Ismail Merchant, director James Ivory, and screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala had made other critically acclaimed films before A Room with a View was released in 1985, but it was this popular film that made them art-house superstars. Splendidly adapted from the novel by E.M. Forster, it's a comedy of the heart, a passionate romance and a study of repression within the British class system of manners and mores. It's that system of rigid behavior that prevents young Lucy Honeychurch (Helena Bonham Carter) from accepting the loving advances of a free-spirited suitor (Julian Sands), who fears that she will follow through with her engagement to a priggish intellectual (Daniel Day-Lewis) whose capacity for passion is virtually nonexistent. During and after a trip to Italy with her protective companion (Maggie Smith), Lucy gradually gets in touch with her true emotions. The fun of watching A Room with a View comes from seeing how Lucy's thoughts and feelings finally arrive at the same romantic conclusion. Through an abundance of humor both subtle and overt, this crowd-pleasing "art movie" rose to an unexpected level of popular appeal. The Merchant-Ivory team received eight Academy Award nominations for their efforts, and won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, Art Direction, and Costume Design.

Merchant and Ivory - Another Great Adaptation
Customer Rating: Score = 4Score = 4Score = 4Score = 4Score = 4
This is the ideal love story we all want to see. The music is beautiful, the characters are people we want to be, the place and setting - Italy and England - places most North Americans want to visit (especially Italy in February). Great directing, great cinematography, great acting... good, romantic fun (without the rush to the airport nonsense...). Look for Daniel Day-Lewis as the dandy-snob in this film - the great Chameleon actor at play.

Che Bambino Caro... watch this movie and the aria will be forever lodged in your psyche. But hey, why not. This is the kind of movie you watch on a cold, windy, snow-blurry Saturday night, eating pizza, sipping Amarone or Chianti and sitting back with the one you love. After this film, may forever the cockles of your heart be stirred and warmed.

Ok, if you are reading this in the first place, then you probably know the film and are wondering if the Blu-Ray transfer is an improvement. After all, this is a low budget film from 1986. The answer, emphatically, is YES. The colors and details are superb. There are some limitations that appear to be in the original film; e.g., some graininess in indoor low light scenes. But so much is gained compared to the former version on LD. To give one example, I was never before aware of just how THICK the fabrics are. We are having friends over to view this. It is gratifying that it is not just another blood and guts epic tailored to the PlayStation crowd. (This is not meant as disrespect, but hey, sometimes a romantic drama is just the thing.) Anyway, my theory is that this was meant as a kind of Blu-Ray demo disk from the BBC video group. Never mind my ranting - - if you have read this far, then buy it!

Information to purchase this movie was right on the money. Came just as promised and in great packaging to boot. I saw this movie when it came out in the 80's and it drove me to go visit Italy and return many times over the years.

A Classic! For those whose spirit wants to break free of the constrictions that society holds them bound to. May you be inspired!

Bad Region Code

Product was not compatible with my player. Makes no sense for Amazon to sell/ship product with incompatible region code to US/Canada. My inquiries regarding exchanging product for a region 1 version were never addressed.
