Summary:
Audrey Hepburn plays a Parisienne whose husband is murdered and who finds she is being followed by four men seeking the fortune her late spouse had hidden away. Cary Grant is the stranger who comes to her aid, but his real motives aren't entirely clear--could he even be the killer? Stanley Donen directs the 1963 film, but it has been called "Hitchcockian" for good reason: the possible duplicities between lovers, the unspoken agendas between a man and woman sharing secrets. Charade is nowhere as significant as a Hitchcock film, but suspense wise it holds its own; and Donen's glossy production lends itself to the welcome experience of stargazing. One wants Cary Grant to be Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn to be no one but Audrey Hepburn in a Hollywood product such as this, and they certainly don't let us down.

The Universal version is a bargain

My copy of "Charade" is on a disc whose main feature is "The Truth About Charlie," a forgettable film based on "Charade." I wasn't interested in "Truth" and only bought the disc to get a good copy of "Charade" at a bargain price.

Unlike the remake, "Charade" is a tense, sit-on-the-edge-of-your-seat thriller with two great stars and a superb supporting cast. The pace is exhilarating and the plot is like a roller-coaster ride that often seems out of control.

This is a great movie, the biggest problem being with buying a copy is that there are so many different companies transphering it to DVD. Some do a good job, some don't. When they are being sold here on Amazon, sellers do not nessicarly sell the version listed...

One of my favorite films of the 60's

Charade has it all: Mystery, romance, suspense, and a lot of dry, witty humor throughout. There is a magical quality to Grant and Hepburn's on screen chemistry. In this short review, I want to make a clear distinction between two of the available versions. Charade This edition, by Madacy, is a good quality product. It has good picture and sound and it will not disappoint those who watch it on an old fashioned standard picture tube. This is the one that most people buy and it is the best value for the money, especially as a used product. However, if you have an big screen HDTV like I do, you will see flaws in the picture due to a lower-resolution scan. You know what I mean, like a slightly compressed JPEG file on your computer. For those with a hi-def big screen TV, you must go for the Criterion Collection Charade - Anamorphic Widescreen Edition (Criterion Collection Spine #57). It is well worth the extra money for the clearest, cleanest possible picture and sound for large HDTV viewing. So which to choose from? It all depends on what kind of TV you have. I hope I have helped you to make the right choice for you. It's a great movie and I know you will love it!

Charade - Anamorphic Widescreen Edition - Criterion Collection Spine #57 - Clearly the Best Of A Confusing Assortment

1. This is a typical Criterion release. Meticulously restored in both the video and audio domains. A beautiful visual (at front-projected 720p) and pretty good sound experience (aferall, it was released in 1963--still the Stone Age of most film sound tracks).

2. This release allows you to focus on the performances of performers (not the quality of the transfer). Curiously, Hepburn gets more great lines that Grant!

3. As compared with junk quality (even by bootleg standards) releases such as the one by A2ZCOS.com "Timeless Classics" in a "Remastered Edition, " we are dealing with truth and reality. The release by A2ZCOS.com (and other off-brands) are turn-offs, if not expensive jokes.

4. Off-brand dogs present video that is several notches below what you might expect from, say, a cell phone video copy from a hacked-up, dirty 16 mm version. Audio is several notches below cell-phone voice quality--all that is missing is cell-phone drop outs!

5. Bottom line: As with all things DVD, beware of off brands from unknown entities.
